Where to Stay Near Comerica Park
The quick read
Comerica Park has something most ballparks do not: a real downtown around it that you can stay inside of and walk to the game from. The park sits on Woodward Avenue in the middle of downtown Detroit, so the right move for most fans is a downtown room within a ten-minute walk, and there are good ones across every price band short of luxury-only.
We do not list a budget tier. The cheap motels are a drive from downtown, and a fan flying in for a Tigers weekend is better served by a walkable room near the bars, Ford Field, and the streetcar than by saving a few dollars out by the freeway. What follows is the walkable downtown cluster, by type.
Distances and brands change. Confirm a property’s current name and walking distance before you book.
Iconic and historic
The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit is the marquee historic pick. It is a restored 1924 landmark tower in the heart of downtown, about a ten-minute walk from the park, with the full-service amenities you would expect and a lobby that is worth seeing whether or not you stay. For a fan who wants the trip to feel like an occasion and still walk to first pitch, this is the one.
Boutique and walkable
If you want character over a big-box hotel, downtown Detroit has a strong run of design-driven boutique stays, all walkable:
- The Shinola Hotel is the Detroit-brand flagship, right on Woodward about a ten-minute walk from the park, built into a row of restored buildings with shops and restaurants on the block.
- The Detroit Foundation Hotel sits in the former Detroit Fire Department headquarters, a design-forward stay with a well-regarded restaurant, a short walk from the action.
- The Siren Hotel fills the restored Wurlitzer Building, a boutique room in the middle of downtown with bars and restaurants a few minutes’ walk away.
These are the picks for a fan who treats the hotel as part of the trip rather than just a place to sleep.
Mid-range and close-in
Not luxury, but reliable for a fan whose plan is to be out at the game, the bars, and the city most of the time:
- The Atheneum Suite Hotel is an all-suite hotel in Greektown, a short walk from the park, handy if you want more room or are traveling with a group.
- The Inn at 97 Winder is one of the closest stays to the park, a historic ten-room inn in the Brush Park neighborhood about a third of a mile away. It is small and books up, so plan ahead for a marquee weekend.
- Downtown also carries a set of full-service mid-range brands within walking distance (Element and Aloft-style properties among them) if you want points or a familiar chain.
How to pick
Pick on walking distance first. Anything in the downtown core puts you within a ten-to-fifteen-minute walk of the gates, the bars on Woodward, and the free streetcar, which is the whole reason to stay downtown for a Tigers game. Go historic at the Book Cadillac if you want the trip to feel like a night out, boutique at the Shinola or the Foundation if you want character, and a mid-range suite or chain if you would rather put the money into tickets and food. For a marquee opponent or a summer weekend, book early; downtown fills up when the Tigers and the Lions draw at the same time.
